The monopoly lasted about seven years: American Express and Hilton’s Carte Blanche arrived in 1958.[^mandell-history] Diners Club had gone public in 1955; by February 1958 it had 560,000 members billing $92 million a year, and it closed the decade with over a million members and a New York Stock Exchange listing.[^vanatta][^simmons-catastrophe] The long glide down came later: a $56.6 million sale to Chase Manhattan was blocked on antitrust grounds in 1965–66; Schneider died in 1964; Bloomingdale engineered Continental Insurance’s takeover and was forced out of the top job in 1969; Citibank bought the company in 1981.
